War Dance (2007)

War Dance (2007)

Much like Gore's film, War/Dance is a great cinematic contribution to the world. Bold statement. This film has less urgency and less catastrophe than Gore's but still, it must be watched. I really like the style of storytelling: they allowed the three main subjects--three children: Rose, Nancy, & Dominic--to do all of the storytelling (without any provided narration). The result is three intimate and soul-wrenching revelations of turmoil and perseverance, and most importantly, of hope. Children can be very profound; these three definitely are. They have that look of war veterans in their eyes. Amazingly captured in the cinematography. The shots, presentation of political & social subject matter, emotional content--all excellent. You will walk away informed & attached, and wanting to take action; you don't feel like you've just read yesterday's newspaper or received some second or third-generation information. This film is moving in so many ways. Go. [Download]

Academic Writing and Publishing

Academic Writing and Publishing

Academic Writing and Publishing will show academics (mainly in the social sciences) how to write and publish research articles. Its aim is to supply examples and brief discussions of recent work in all aspects of the area in short, sharp chapters. It should serve as a handbook for postgraduates and lecturers new to publishing. The book is written in a readable and lively personal style. The advice given is direct and based on up to date research that goes beyond that given in current textbooks. For example, the chapter on titles lists different kinds of titles and their purposes not discussed in other texts. The chapter on abstracts instructs the reader on writing structured abstracts from the start.[Download]

NASA’s Nuclear Frontier: The Plum Brook Reactor Facility

NASA’s Nuclear Frontier: The Plum Brook Reactor Facility

In 1953, President Eisenhower delivered a speech called “Atoms for Peace” to the United Nations General Assembly. He described the emergence of the atomic age and the weapons of mass destruction that were piling up in the storehouses of the American and Soviet nations. Although neither side was aiming for global destruction, Eisenhower wanted to “move out of the dark chambers of horrors into the light, to find a way by which the minds of men, the hopes of men, the souls of men everywhere, can move towards peace and happiness and well-being.” One way Eisenhower hoped this could happen was by transforming the atom from a weapon of war into a useful tool for civilization.

Many people believed that there were unprecedented opportunities for peaceful nuclear applications. These included hopeful visions of atomicpowered cities, cars, airplanes, and rockets. Nuclear power might also serve as an efficient way to generate electricity in space to support life and machines.[Download]

The Social and Ecological Market Economy – A Model for Asian Development?

The model of the social and ecological market economy can provide a perspective from which to approach the many unresolved questions in the region, and, after many discussions with our partners in government agencies and the private sector, we have come to believe that Asian perceptions of the state, the economy, and social values potentially match the concepts of the social and ecological market economy in many areas. The Changing Twenties

The Changing Twenties

Despite all the much advertised changes in technology and popular culture, being 15 today is still much like being 15 a generation ago. Teens’ lives are still framed in large measure by parents, schools, peers, and popular culture.

Farther up the age scale—despite all the changes in the economy—being 35 today bears more than a passing resemblance to being 35 a generation ago. Adults’ lives are still framed by careers, marriage, children, and civic ties.

But I want to suggest that being 25 today is very different. Today’s young adults are much less likely to have committed themselves to a mate or to a career. Unlike my generation, only a tiny fraction experience military service. Many go back and forth between episodic education and temporary jobs and between independent living and their parents’ homes. Most young people in their 20s are living outside of institutions and, therefore, without the structure and norms that institutions provide. Many feel that they are living without a script and are making up their lives as they go. And despite the birth dates on their driver’s licenses, many of them are not sure that they are adults at all. [Download]

Oil Shale Development in the United States

Oil Shale Development in the United States

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when crude oil prices were high, government and private-sector energy experts took a hard look at the costs and benefits of extracting oil from the vast deposits of oil shale that lie beneath the western United States (much of it under government land). Oil prices soon subsided, and interest in the topic waned. With oil prices again spiking and global demand showing no signs of abating, it makes sense to reexamine the costs and benefits of oil shale development. In this report, the authors describe the oil shale resources (estimated at more than triple the proven oil reserves of Saudi Arabia); the suitability, cost, and performance of technologies for developing these resources; and the key energy, environmental, land-use, and socioeconomic policy issues that need to be addressed by government decisionmakers. The authors conclude by outlining both the challenges and opportunities for early action with regard to those policy issues. [Download]

Estimates of Undiscovered Oil and Gas North of the Arctic Circle

Estimates of Undiscovered Oil and Gas North of the Arctic Circle

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has completed an assessment of undiscovered conventional oil and gas resources in all areas north of the Arctic Circle. Using a geology-based probabilistic methodology, the USGS estimated the occurrence of undiscovered oil and gas in 33 geologic provinces thought to be prospective for petroleum. The sum of the mean estimates for each province indicates that 90 billion barrels of oil, 1,669 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and 44 billion barrels of natural gas liquids may remain to be found in the Arctic, of which approximately 84 percent is expected to occur in offshore areas. Intelligent Investor: 4 Principles Of Investing

Intelligent Investor: 4 Principles Of Investing

During these times of uncertainty – oil prices fluctuating, slowdown in the economy, interest rate confusion, investors may be encouraged to make changes to their well-structured investments. It is always prudent to re-visit your investment plans within the scope of your financial objectives. But changing your plans based on recent events, news items, or forecasts is not a prudent approach to investment management.

Yes, it’s true – NOBODY knows the future. We don’t even know what will happen tomorrow. People want to believe that it is possible to predict events and outcomes.

Unfortunately, not even that renowned investor,Warren Buffet, can foresee the future. Some people make lucky guesses or constantly predict calamities. Famed investment analyst Elaine Gazarelli predicted (guessed) to the exact date that there would be a crash on October 19, 1987, yet her track record after that prediction has been miserable.

If every day you say it’s going to rain, eventually you will be right.

Yet some events have a level of certainty. The sun has a record of rising every day – sure, clouds block it some days – but it still shines. You know that in winter it will most likely snow in most cities in Canada. You also recognize that the winter will end, followed by spring and summer. [Download]

Real Estate Investment: Dawn of a New Era

Real Estate Investment: Dawn of a New Era

The recent era of exceptional real estate returns fuelled by low cost and readily available debt came to an end in 2007. Some investors will choose to wait until the economic and capital market outlook becomes clearer, before committing further capital to the sector. Yet, although the medium-term and long-term outlook is for lower returns than in the recent past, it is still at a level of return and risk that will be attractive compared to other asset classes.

With the global economy set to slow from its very rapid growth rates of the last few years, commercial real estate market fundamentals should remain sound, provided slower growth in the US in particular does not become a recession. Growth in demand for commercial real estate may weaken, but it should remain suffi cient to absorb the muted levels of new construction in the pipeline and to help underpin rental growth.
However, the risks to the outlook clearly are asymmetric on the downside. [Download]

OPEC Monthly Oil Market Report, March 2008

OPEC Monthly Oil Market Report, March 2008

The OPEC Reference Basket averaged $90.64/b in February, representing a gain of $2.29 or 2.59% over the previous month. Prices were pushed higher by US dollar weakness, which encouraged the continued inflow of funds into the paper-oil market as investors sought to hedge against inflation and currency fluctuations. Revived geopolitical developments also pressured the market, although the upward trend was capped by builds in US crude oil and gasoline stocks. The Basket surged into the first week of March peaking above the $100/b level amid continued dollar depreciation and a late winter cold snap in North America. The OPEC Reference Basket price reached $102.39/b on 13 March. [Download]

In a world that requires business leaders to address the concerns of all their stakeholders, we must reshape management education to be both practical and aspirational.

The world is asking something new from masters of business administration, and MBA students are responding by demanding something new from their schools and future employers. Given that the MBA talent pool is a key component of the talent acquisition strategy at our own firm, we’re experiencing this phenomenon firsthand. It is evident in surveys of MBA students as well. Iran’s Political, Demographic, and Economic Vulnerabilities

Iran’s Political, Demographic, and Economic Vulnerabilities

Iran is one of the United States' most important foreign policy concerns. It has also been an extraordinarily difficult country with which to engage. Ironically, while the leadership has been hostile to the United States, Iranian society has evolved in ways friendly to the United States and US interests. This monograph assesses current political, ethnic, demographic, and economic trends and vulnerabilities in Iran. For example, the numbers of young people entering the Iranian labor force are at an all-time high. The authors then provide recommendations for US policies that might foster trends beneficial to US interests. For example, greater use of markets and a more-vibrant private sector would contribute to the development of sources of political power independent from the current regime. The authors finally note a need for patience. Even if favorable trends take root, it will take time for them to come to fruition. [Download]

AsiaNow, Issue 1, 2008, The Real Estate Issue

AsiaNow, Issue 1, 2008, The Real Estate Issue

Asia’s residential real estate markets are modernizing–at varying paces–and becoming critical economic engines with important social ramifications.

In real estate, the saying goes, it’s all about “location, location, location.” In Asia, however, gaining perspective on real estate markets depends on where you look—it changes from location to location to location.

In China, home ownership is seen as a relatively new way to build wealth and security, initiated by the housing reforms and the end to government housing in the mid to late 1990s. Furthermore, with interest rates on household savings traditionally kept at artificially low levels by the authorities, and demand for housing high, real estate has been an attractive investment for many as property values have risen rapidly over the past decade. Tori Amos - Boys For Pele

Tori Amos - Boys For Pele

Boys for Pele, the title of Tori Amos's epic third album, is as awkward and confusing as the music inside. Though it sounds like a recruitment slogan for Little League soccer, the name actually refers to the lost temples of feminine divinity. Pele, you see, is the Hawaiian volcano goddess; the boys, well, they're the sacrifices that quell the rumbling lady's rage. Attempting to regain fires stolen long ago, Pele rewrites the crucifixion to star a girl Jesus and in doing so conjures a forgotten matriarchal mythology. While Amos's characters--Jupiter, Muhammad, Lucifer--are male by name, the aural landscape into which they're thrown is as symbolically and expressionistically female as Georgia O'Keeffe's skull-and-roses paintings. Pele is a complex and formless--and often impenetrable--work of gothic-pop chamber music, both beautiful and ghostly in its nearly complete reliance on Amos's rolling Bosendorfer grand piano, chilling harpsichord (which she bangs like a courtly punk rocker), and acrobatic voice (as earthy as Joni Mitchell's and as otherworldly as Bjork's). Unfortunately, she takes us only halfway: her songs engage and challenge us to understand, but the imagery offers few clues to help us crack their frustrating opacity. Pele ends up as much a pretentious and self-indulgent trip as it is a synthesis of talent, imagination, and skewed vision. Still, there's reason to celebrate that an album as formalistically and thematically alien to pop audiences as Pele would win such quick success upon its original release. [DOWNLOAD]

Billy Joel - River of Dreams

Billy Joel - River of Dreams

RIVER OF DREAMS finds Billy Joel once again in the familiar territory that he staked out early on in his long and very successful career: well crafted songs, strong vocals sung with conviction, and thoughtful production, built solidly from the ground up. Joel has always been a stylistic chameleon. He can conjure up '50s doowop or a beautiful Beatlesque melody and then suddenly turn on a dime and come at you with a hard-edged, urgently rocking tale about life, love lost and lessons to be learned.

On "River of Dreams" Billy rocks hard, but with a maturity and insight befitting the grey that flecks his beard. Of course just when you think you know where Billy Joel is going he will always surprise you. "Good Night My Angel' is a beautiful lullaby with a strong classical undercurrent that would make Brahms smile. Other key tracks are "All About Soul," the title cut and the reflective ode "2000 Years". [Download]

Clean Energy Trends 2008

Clean Energy Trends 2008

Amid a challenging economic outlook—plummeting housing prices, rising foreclosure rates, record-high oil prices, sinking consumer confidence, looming recession—2007 was another banner year for clean energy, with no signs of a slowdown in 2008. Solar, wind, biofuels, geothermal, energy intelligence, hybrid- and all-electric vehicles, advanced batteries, green buildings, and other clean-energy-related technologies and markets provided bright spots in an otherwise sluggish economy.

Clean Edge, which has been tracking the growth of clean-energy markets since 2000, reports a 40 percent increase in revenue growth for solar photovoltaics, wind, biofuels, and fuel cells in 2007, up from $55 billion in 2006 to $77.3 billion in 2007. For the first time, three of these are generating revenue in excess of $20 billion apiece, with wind now exceeding $30 billion. New global investments in energy technologies—including venture capital, project finance, public markets, and research and development—have expanded by 60 percent from $92.6 billion in 2006 to $148.4 billion in 2007, according to research firm New Energy Finance. {Download]

European Economic News, No. 10 June 2008

As we celebrate the first decade of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) we should remember that the launch of EMU and the euro ten years ago marked a watershed in European integration. It transferred a core element of national sovereignty – monetary and exchange rate policy – to EU level, with far-reachingeconomic and political ramifications. For the international monetary system it was the most significant change at least since the end of the Bretton Woods system in the early 1970s. To mark this anniversary, the Commission has produced a report on the first ten years of Economic and Monetary Union that looks at its successes so far and the challenges it faces as it goes forward into its second decade in a changing global context.[Download]

F-22 Raptor: 5th Generation Fighter

Fresh from the hands of the testers to those of the operators, the F-22 Raptor has wasted no time in demonstrating its effectiveness, unique flexibility and synergy with other assets in operationally-realistic scenarios.

With more than 100 Raptors delivered, the fighter is operational and has been put through its paces in demanding joint exercises. It is clear that the introduction of the F-22 is ushering in a shift in both the scope of the contribution that the aircraft can make to an increasingly netenabled fight, and in the evolving role played by Raptor pilots in facilitating these contributions.

Last year, in the spring, a dozen F-22s and more than 250 personnel from the U.S. Air Force’s 1st Fighter Wing’s 27th Fighter Squadron from Langley Air Force Base, Va., took part in a 90-day deployment to Kadena Air Base, Japan. We last spoke with Rick Burton more than seven years ago. At the time, we were publishing our interviews on Reveries.com, and Rick was director of the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon.

Rick was extremely concerned, back then, about the future of professional sports in America. “What’s driving me is my passion for an American way of life,” Rick said. “I’m worried that we may be losing parts of it.”

After citing a litany of issues, from rising ticket prices to the popularity of videogames to the decline of youth sports leagues, he challenged the big leagues to find new and innovative ways to connect with sports fans or risk losing their relevance. ...[Download]
