Striking First: Preemptive and Preventive Attack in U.S. National Security Policy

Striking First: Preemptive and Preventive Attack in U.S. National Security Policy
RAND | 2006 | ISBN 0-8330-3881-8 | English | 345 pages | PDF | 1.9 MB

RAND Project AIR FORCE studied the post-9/11 shift in U.S. defense policy emphasis toward preemptive and preventive attack, asking under what conditions preemptive or preventive attack is worth considering as a response to perceived threats. It considered the role such first-strike strategies are likely to play in future U.S. national security policy. Finally, it identified implications these conclusions have for military planners and policymakers as they prepare to deal with national security threats in the next decade.

This research brief reports that the new emphasis on striking first in U.S. national security policy since September 11, 2001, will not likely produce a correspondingly great change in the future shape or use of American military power.

Supplement to Dance Magazine : Lifetime Learners: Teacher Training, April 2008

Supplement to Dance Magazine : Lifetime Learners: Teacher Training, April 2008
English | 25 pages | PDF | 2.8 MB

No matter your level of mastery, there is always something new to know about one’s own body. Former San Francisco Ballet dancer, Augusta Moore, became interested in the Feldenkrais Method® as part of a larger investigation of anatomy and kinesiology. In “Finding Your Spine” (page 18), she talks about using Feldenkrais principles to help dancers achieve greater artistry.

Moore, who is director of ballet for the ODC School, told me she agrees with those who say ballet technique should not begin until age 8. “But teach something,” she says. On page 4, you can see how Beverly Spell does just that. Her LEAP ’N LEARN program offers a lesson plan for how to begin.

If you attend the American Dance Festival this summer, you may encounter a group of unusually talented students. In partnership with Hollins University, ADF now offers a master of fine arts degree with active, mid-career dance artists in mind (page 22). Doug Elkins, Lisa Race, and Shani Collins are among the participants who will attend ADF in Durham, NC, to partially fulfill degree requirements.

Not every student will become a professional dancer, yet performing is a vital aspect of a dancer’s education. Beginning on page 10, writer Jim Williams talks to Sara Mau and Deborah Carr, two dancers who took different career paths to reach a common goal. They each create intensive performance opportunities for nonprofessionals in Omaha.

I hope you’ll check among the teacher training workshops listed beginning on page 26, when you’re considering your personal learning options for the summer. There’s something for everyone.

One of the single biggest investments in Germany is currently being made in Leuna, a chemical-manufacturing location in Saxony-Anhalt. Ireland’s Quinn Group is building a new factory for €260 million in order to produce special synthetic materials starting in 2009.

This is also the group’s first venture into the chemicalbusiness. The company decided it should be a German-Japanese-Irish cooperative effort, with the technology coming from East Asia, the experience for building and operating the new factory from Germany, and the company management and financial resources from Ireland. Quinn had been planning to move into the chemical business for a long time. To begin with, the group bought the license to a process for the production of methymethacrylate (MMA) from a Japanese company.

Since the beginning of this magazine, I get several phone calls a month and emails asking the question, “Why doesn’t Tripoli adopt ER as their offical publication?” To cut down the number of times I answer this question, I’ve decided to write something here on the subject along with a bit of history and background.

In 2000, ER came out with its first issue. Mid 2000 I was contacted by NAR and asked if I’d like the publication to appear on their official membership forms as an alternative magazine subscription. I accepted this offer on the condition that Tripoli be offered the same opportunity (as not to play favorites). NAR had no problems with this and in mid 2000 I made my first proposal to Tripoli: That ER be offered as an alternative publication where TRA members would get a 5% discount on the subscription price if they joined TRA along with subscribing.

Reforming Teacher Education: Something Old, Something New
RAND | 2006 | ISBN-13: 978-0-8330-3982-8 | English | 198 pages | PDF | 1.2 MB

Teacher education has been subject to both scathing criticism and innumerable efforts designed to reform it or to save it from being dismantled. One of the latest and most well funded efforts aimed at teacher education reform is boldly titled Teachers for a New Era (TNE). Eleven colleges and universities of various types nationwide were selected to participate in TNE. The TNE initiative emphasizes evidence-based decisionmaking, close collaboration between education and arts and sciences faculty, and teaching as an academically taught clinical-practice profession.

The RAND Corporation and the Manpower Research Demonstration Corporation followed and evaluated the TNE initiative from October 2002 to September 2005, conducting on-site interviews with TNE grantees. The authors place TNE in the larger context of teacher education reform and critically examine the process by which reform will result in highly qualified teachers capable of producing improvements in student learning. They also examine TNE’s contributions to the grantee institutions’ teacher education programs and organizational culture and assess the sustainability of TNE beyond the life of the grant.

Photo to Movie 3.5.1

Photo to Movie 3.5.1 | 6.3 MB

Photo to Movie can turn your digital photos into spectacular QuickTime movies.
It will literally change the way you look at your photos forever. Photo to Movie will gently zoom and pan across your photos, blending them together while moving from one photo to another. Your photos will come alive in a way that will engage and impress your audience. Forget the traditional static slide show -- use Photo to Movie to bring your photos alive, focusing attention on the important part of the photo.

Motion Effects and Transitions

Photo to Movie is easy to use. Simply drag photos from the media browser and drop them into Photo to Movie. Photo to Movie will automatically add motion effects and transitions between photos.
Drag in some music. Add some titles to describe your movie. Then press preview to see how your movie will look and sound. Choose your rendering format and save it to a file. The QuickTime movie is ready to use in iMovie, iDVD, Final Cut, or any other software that utilizes QuickTime movies.

Titles

Add some titles to describe your movie or your photos. Choose the typeface, size, style, drop shadows, and color (including transparency). Position them by direct dragging. Fade the titles in and out for smooth display.

Soundtrack

Drag your music from media browser into the timeline and you have a soundtrack to add that extra audience attachment to your movie. You can adjust the timing of the music using the timeline and cross fade music pieces by overlapping them. Use the waveform to synchronize motion with specific sounds within your music. The inspector shows you all of the information about the selected piece of audio and during rendering you have the choice of any audio format QuickTime supports. Record your own voice narration too.

Motions Paths

Form complex, multi-segment motion paths, zooming and rotating your photo along the way. Unlike other similar applications, Photo to Movie allows you to set the motion of the duration along the entire motion path, not just the individual segments. This allows you to have a steady motion speed over the entire path.
You can also choose to set motion durations on a segment by segment basis. The keyframes define the motion path, the zoom, and the rotation. You can easily spin in your entire photo by setting the rotation angle to be greater than 360°.

Rendering

Standard or High Definition WidescreenOnce you have created your movie, you can render it to a variety of formats. Render it to the e-mail, web format, or CD-ROM for immediate use. Render it to DV Stream or HDV for use in iMovie, Final Cut, iDVD, or DVD Studio Pro. Photo to Movie also includes a revolutionary algorithm for optimizing each frame of the movie to nearly eliminate flicker from aliasing when showing the movie on a television. You can also choose your output format (standard 4:3 or widescreen 16:9), and the background color to be used when the key frames go out of bounds of their photos. You can even set the background to transparent so that the movie can be composited on top of another background.

The Freak Factor: Discovering Uniqueness by Flaunting Weakness

The Freak Factor: Discovering Uniqueness by Flaunting Weakness
ChangeThis | 09-April-2008 | isbn 0402578684402 | English | PDF | 27 pages | 1 Mb

What is your biggest weakness? Nearly every job interview includes this question. Once you get the
job, the same question will be asked during performance evaluations, and this time your manager
will have their own perspective. Your co-workers and subordinates might even offer their opinions as
part of 360-degree feedback.
Your family also has strong feelings about your flaws and limitations. Even complete strangers
are eager to offer feedback regarding your driving skills. Given this constant criticism and your own
self-awareness, you have probably developed some sense of what is wrong with you.
What should you do with this knowledge? How should you respond?

There are three basic options for self-improvement.

fix weaknesses
build on strengths
do both

The most common choice is to build on strengths and fix weaknesses, usually with special attention
to fixing weaknesses. This is prevalent at work where annual appraisals are focused on overcoming
our apparent limitations. Similarly, in homes and schools, parents and teachers expect children
to excel in all academic subjects, athletic activities and social skills. Those who are lacking in any
particular area are confronted with their flaws and given strategies for improvement.

The obvious goal of these remediation efforts is to foster success by producing well-rounded people.
However, do these efforts really work, and is being well-rounded a worthy or realistic goal? My experience
as an individual, consultant, parent and leader indicates that efforts to fix weaknesses are ineffective.
Furthermore, I believe that the goal of being well-rounded is both undesirable and impossible to attain.
The purpose of this manifesto is to explain why I believe this and to offer a better alternative.

The Tragedy of Planning: Losing the Greaat Australian Dream
Institute of Public Affairs | 2006 | ISBN 0 909536 67 8 | English | PDF | 93 pages | 1.2 MB

A house provides us with a place of rest, a place for our possessions, and a place to raise our families. Not only this, but a house is often the largest investment we make during our lifetime.

However housing is becoming unaffordable for more and more people. Governments across Australia have restricted the supply of land, increased charges on new properties and amplified the number and intensity of regulations, making the Great Australian Dream - to own a home - a rarer privilege for Australians.

"I think there’s an enormous amount of time wasted by people trying to plan for long periods ahead, when history has shown that you just can’t do this. You can’t place restrictions on people because of things you think should happen in 20 years, when we have absolutely no idea of what is likely to be the situation at that time." —Clem Jones (ALP), Lord Mayor of Brisbane, 1961–1975

I.B.Tauris & Co Ltd | 2004 | ISBN 1 85043 423 9 | English | 288 pages | PDF | 1.2 MB

Sex and the City, with its trendsetting fashions and frank discussions about sex, has been iconic from the get-go, and these collected essays analyze its commentary about modern-day society. Joanna di Mattia examines Carrie's reactions to her two most significant suitors, the sexually exciting Mr. Big and the romantically inclined Aiden. David Greven compares the strange guys the women often encounter to The X-Files "freaks of the week." Astrid Henry sees the women's enduring friendship as the biggest symbol of female empowerment in the show. "One of the most important themes is the value of female friendships and the role of these friendships in helping each of the . . . characters to understand herself and her life," Henry notes. And what book on Sex and the City would be complete without a mention of those famous Manolo Blahniks? Sarah Niblock examines the shoes' creator and their significance in an urban setting. Anyone who loves Sex and the City and appreciates how it reflects contemporary times will want to read these smart, accessible essays.

We eat and eat, but still remain hungry. Nutrition and metabolism expert Dr. Ron Rosedale thinks that the key to lasting weight loss is turning off our "hunger switch." When we control leptin, we can control our hunger; and when we control our hunger, we can control our weight. The book includes four weeks' worth of delicious recipes.

Buddhist Missionary Society Malaysia | 2002 | ISBN 983-40071-2-7 | English | 438 pages | PDF | 1.17 MB

There is a growing interest in Buddhism the world over because many informed people have grown rather weary of religious dogmatism and superstition, on one hand, and greed and selfishness arising from materialism, on the other. Buddhism can teach humanity to walk the Middle Path of moderation and have a better understanding on how to lead a richer life of peace and happiness.

He anticipates a "revolution in values" through which the elite will becomes more public-spirited and less self-interested.

The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global

The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global
Cambridge University Press (2005) | ISBN-13: 9780521791403 | English | 362 pages | PDF | 1.8 MB

Since September 11, Al Qaeda has been portrayed as an Islamist front united in armed struggle, or jihad, against the Christian West. However, as the historian and commentator Fawaz A. Gerges argues, the reality is rather different and more complex. In fact, Al Qaeda represents a minority within the jihadist movement, and its strategies have been vehemently criticized and opposed by religious nationalists among the jihadis, who prefer to concentrate on changing the Muslim world rather than taking the fight global. It is this rift that led to the events of September 11 and that has dominated subsequent developments. Through several years of primary field research, the author unravels the story of the jihadist movement and explores how it came into being, the philosophies of its founding fathers, its structure, the rifts and tensions that split its ranks, and why some members, like Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, favored international over local strategies in taking the war to the West. This is an articulate and original book that sheds light on the tactics used by the jihadis in the last three decades. As more alienated young Muslims are seduced into joining, the author asks where the jihadist movement is going and whether it can survive and shed its violent character.

On Suicide Bombing - by Talal Asad

On Suicide Bombing by Talal Asad
Columbia University Press (2007) | ISBN-13: 9780231141529 | English | 142 pages | PDF | 1.8 MB

Like many people in America and around the world, Talal Asad experienced the events of September 11, 2001, largely through the media and the emotional response of others. For many non-Muslims, "the suicide bomber" quickly became the icon of "an Islamic culture of death"—a conceptual leap that struck Asad as problematic. Is there a "religiously-motivated terrorism?" If so, how does it differ from other cruelties? What makes its motivation "religious"? Where does it stand in relation to other forms of collective violence?

Drawing on his extensive scholarship in the study of secular and religious traditions as well as his understanding of social, political, and anthropological theory and research, Asad questions Western assumptions regarding death and killing. He scrutinizes the idea of a "clash of civilizations," the claim that "Islamic jihadism" is the essence of modern terror, and the arguments put forward by liberals to justify war in our time. He critically engages with a range of explanations of suicide terrorism, exploring many writers' preoccupation with the motives of perpetrators. In conclusion, Asad examines our emotional response to suicide (including suicide terrorism) and the horror it invokes.

On Suicide Bombing is an original and provocative analysis critiquing the work of intellectuals from both the left and the right. Though fighting evil is an old concept, it has found new and disturbing expressions in our contemporary "war on terror." For Asad, it is critical that we remain aware of the forces shaping the discourse surrounding this mode of violence, and by questioning our assumptions about morally good and morally evil ways of killing, he illuminates the fragile contradictions that are a part of our modern subjectivity.

Their secret struggle and sacrifice saved the American coast from nuclear catastrophe. Told in the words of the survivors, it is a story never before revealed outside the submarine community.

Hitler's Table Talk 1941-1944

Hitler's Table Talk 1941-1944
Enigma Books | 2000 | ISBN 1-929631-05-7 | English | 790 pages | PDF | 6.3 MB

One of the most significant documents of recent history. This book records private, off the record, informal conversations of a man, who, more then anyone else, came close to destroying the western world.

Hitler's Table Talk 1941-1944 records the private, off the record, informal conversations of a man who, more than anyone else, came close to destroying the western world. On Martin Bormann's instructions, the secret conversations at Hitler's headquarters from July 1941 to November 1944 were all recorded. This is the real companion volume to Hitler's Mein Kampf, whereby what had been a project suddenly was reality, almost to the disbelief of its author.

Here is a startling account of Hitler freely talking about his enemies, his friends, his ambitions, his failures, his secret dreams voicing his thoughts to his intimate associates as the sun set at the end of each day of the war. We see here a conversational Hitler letting down his guard to his trusted henchmen. Miraculously, Martin Bormann persuaded Hitler to let these talks be taken down by a team of specially picked shorthand writers. Hitler had intended, after his famous tyranny, to use these notes as source material for the books he planned to write about the glory of the Thousand-Year Reich.

Now they have come to us, indisputably authentic, a raw, fascinating, unretouched look at the inner recesses of the mind of Adolf Hitler. Der Fuhrer's mind was crude and narrow; he had little education and, as we see here, no humanity; but we can also see that he was (as he himself knew) a political genius, a terrible simplifier, a man who, with no equipment except his own will power, personality and ideas, attempted to bring mankind into a terrible darkness.

As Trevor-Roper says in his brilliant introduction if we are to discover the mind of Hitler, we must penetrate behind the thick curtains of superficial evidence which conceal it the repellant character which formed its expression, and for which no power of thought can compensate, and the unreliable intermediaries who have commented upon it. We must go directly to Hitler's personal utterances: not indeed to his letters and speeches these, so valuable, are too public, too formalized for such purposes to his secret conversations, his table talk.

Goebbels. Mastermind of the Third Reich

Goebbels. Mastermind of the Third Reich
Parforce (UK) Ltd. | 1996 | ISBN 1 872197 13 2 | English | 939 pages | PDF | 2.6 MB

This latest work by Irving (Goring: A Biography, LJ 3/1/89) depends heavily on Goebbels's diaries and related papers. Unfortunately, the diaries are boring. Goebbels devoted much of his journal to describing his emotions (banal), love life (promiscuous), and marriage (dysfunctional).

At its best, this aspect of the book is keyhole history. Far more troubling is Irving's general approach to the history of the Third Reich. He takes pains to insist periodically upon his distaste for Goebbels's Nazi extremism, but to describe Hitler as "less radical on the Jewish question" in 1942 than was Goebbels is to deny reality. Paradigmatic as well is Irving's insistence that Goebbels's vicious attacks on Jews in the 1930s were in response to the "hysteria" generated by the foreign press, the Comintern, and such dangerous "Jewish" organizations as the World League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism.

In contrast, Irving offers no new evidence establishing Goebbels as the Reich's "mastermind." He neglects such important subjects as the sources of Goebbels's anti-Semitism, his development of the theories and techniques of mass propaganda, and his role as wartime Gauleiter of Berlin. Ralf Reuth's Goebbels (Harcourt, 1993) offers readers a more balanced approach.
