The Mystery of Banking by Murray N. Rothbard

The Mystery of Banking by Murray N. Rothbard
The Ludwig von Mises Institute| 1st Edition 1983 |ISBN: 0--943940-04-4 | English | 314Pages | PDF | 19MB

You have in your hands a unique academic treatise on money and banking, a book which combines erudition, clarity of expression, economic theory, monetary theory, economic history, and an appropriate dose of conspiracy theory. Anyone who attempts to explain the mystery of banking—a deliberately contrived mystery in many ways—apart from all of these aspects has not done justice to the topic. But, then again, this is an area in which justice has always been regarded as a liability. The moral account of central banking has been overdrawn since 1694: “insufficient funds.” [Download]

EuroBiz Magazine, June 2008
PDF | 86 pages | 9 MB

EuroBiz magazine is the internal journal of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, published monthly for Chamber members by SinoMedia Ltd. Distributed to over 20,000 China-based company decision-makers.

The pitfalls of the Sino-foreign joint venture in China are well documented. For many foreign business people in China, the phrase conjures up all manner of frightening images, from disregarded contracts and foot-dragging partners to stolen trademarks, embezzled funds and bitter lawsuits.

However, since more industries became open to 100 percent foreign ownership in the late 1990s, it has become an accepted truth for many that investing through a wholly foreign-owned entity, or WFOE (pronounced “woofie”), is preferable in any sector in which foreign direct investment (FDI) is not restricted. The numbers show a clear trend: Utilised FDI has declined steadily over the last 10 years – roughly since restrictions on many sectors were removed – while so-called “organic” investment through WFOEs has soared (see graphs). The NIJ Journal, published several times a year, features articles to help criminal justice policymakers and practitioners stay informed about new developments. The NIJ Journal presents research-based information that can help inform policy decisions and improve understanding of the criminal justice system.

As this issue of the NIJ Journal goes to press, 2008 has just begun. I want to take this opportunity to say a few words about NIJ’s work over the past year.

Law enforcement is undergoing rapid change in the areas of recruitment, training, technology, immigration, and counterterrorism, among others. How, for example, are police departments balancing their daily operations with the post-9/11 pressure to prevent and respond to another terrorist attack? Last year, NIJ joined forces with Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government to take a hard look at these changes and the new demands they are creating for police departments. The 3-year collaboration will not only help refine NIJ’s research agenda, it also will produce practical policy and best practices for policing. [Download]

NASA: Fifty Years and Beyond

NASA: Fifty Years and Beyond
PDF | 20 pages | English | 4 MB

Jeff Hamilton was born in 1958—the same year that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was created—and grew up on a small farm outside Huntsville, Alabama.

Fifteen miles away was NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, where engines for the Saturn V rocket were being tested. When these tests took place, Hamilton recalled, “The ground would shake, the house would shake, the windows would rattle. I would run out into the yard, and you could feel it as a rumbling, you could feel it as a low-frequency thump in your chest, and you could see the smoke billowing up on the horizon.

That was real cool, for a kid growing up on a chicken farm.” Listening to the thundering roar of those rockets in the mid-1960s, Hamilton dreamed that one day he might get to work on those engines himself. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and joined the University’s Cooperative Education Program in 1979. That allowed him to take classes one semester and work the following semester for NASA’s Marshall Center. As luck (or fate) would have it, Hamilton’s very first assignment was to work in the exact same place where the Saturn V engines had roared. [Download]

Globalization and Technology Absorption in Europe and Central Asia

Globalization and Technology Absorption in Europe and Central Asia

Globalization and Technology Absorption in Europe and Central Asia is part of the World Bank Working Paper series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank’s ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion.

Innovation and cross-border absorption of knowledge are central forces behind economic convergence and sustained growth. Absorption of technology is considered a necessary step to promote the development of human capital and the productive base, paving the way for innovations at the global knowledge frontier. Research and development, patents, trade, and foreign direct investment are major channels of technological absorption, allowing diffusion of new ideas and manufacturing best practices among countries and firms. These channels constitute the central focus of this study.

This study uses patent databases, surveys of enterprises, and case studies to investigate how the presence of specific channels of absorption molds decision making about technology. Trade and FDI flows show considerable promise as catalysts for the region to upgrade its technology and near the global technology frontier. [Download]

In Modern Bondage: Sex Trafficking in the Americas (Second Revised Edition)

In Modern Bondage: Sex Trafficking in the Americas (Second Revised Edition)

In 1998, the International Human Rights Law Institute (IHRLI) began examining the trafficking of women and children for purposes of sexual exploitation within a human rights framework. Its research targeted international reports on trafficking by various United Nations bodies and Special Rapporteurs as well as existing national laws. A review of these efforts and a study of the publicly available literature on the subject suggested that a global approach was needed for an appropriate understanding of the phenomenon that could take into account various cultural, economic, and geographic differences.

IHRLI’s global research perspective highlighted the common elements of this practice to modern-day slavery and its consequences for every nation. It also underscored the need to establish and support a worldwide response regime to this human rights, social, and criminal problem.

Several important steps were taken in recent years to build momentum for an international response. The international community ratified the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (2000), which entered into force on September 29, 2003, and its supplemental Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children (2000), which entered into force December 25, 2003. In 2002, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a set of universally applicable Recommended Principles and Guidelines for Human Rights and Human Trafficking. [Download]

Learn to Write Chinese Characters

Learn to Write Chinese Characters
Author: Johan Bjorksten
Paperback: 123 pages
Publisher: Yale University Press (August 31, 1994)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0300057717

Chinese characters are one of the most fascinating aspects of the language and occupy a prominent place in Chinese culture. Good handwriting is also very important in learning Chinese: the strokes that make up the characters must be written in a certain rigidly specified order, and they must also be written in a special way.

This book is the only introductory manual for writing Chinese characters prepared specifically for an English-speaking audience. The author guides the reader through the fundamentals of writing and introduces the different types of script used in China today, their evolution, their place in Chinese tradition, and the relation among them. The book provides basic instruction in writing with a modern fountain pen rather than a brush. Only commonly used characters—both simplified and full forms—appear as examples and exercises. Also included is an explanation of how to look up characters in a Chinese dictionary.

This attractive and charming book, full of anecdotes and calligraphic aphorisms, is both a useful classroom tool and an enjoyable reading experience for anyone with an interest in the language and culture of China.

Johan Björkstén has studied and worked in China for a number of years and has taught Chinese to nonnative learners. Currently a resident of Uppsala, Sweden, he has also published a beginner's textbook of the Chinese language. [Download]

This book looks at the transformation that Art and Art history is undergoing through engagement with the digital revolution. Since its initiation in 1985, CHArt (Computers and the History of Art) has set out to promote interaction between the rapidly developing new Information Technology and the study and practice of Art. It has become increasingly clear in recent years that this interaction has led, not just to the provision of new tools for the carrying out of existing practices, but to the evolution of unprecedented activities and modes of thought. This collection of papers represents the variety, innovation and richness of significant presentations made at the CHArt Conferences of 2001 and 2002. Some show new methods of teaching being employed, making clear in particular the huge advantages that IT can provide for engaging students in learning and interactive discussion. It also shows how much is to be gained from the flexibility of the digital image – or could be gained if the road block of copyright is finally overcome. Others look at the impact on collections and archives, showing exciting ways of using computers to make available information about collections and archives and to provide new accessibility to archives.
